Welcome to Zippel Bay State Park located on the shores of Lake of the Woods near the United States/Canada border in Williams, Minnesota.
Park History: Before the arrival of European settlers the region that is now Zippel Bay State Park was occupied by the Cree, Assiniboine, Monsonis, and Chippewa Tribes for many centuries. In 1732 a French Explorer named Pierre Gaultier de la Verendrye entered the region and established Fort St. Charles on the northwest shores of Lake of the Woods. The fort opened up the region to many fur traders. When the fort was abandoned in 1763 the British claimed it and for the next 75 years it was a popular French-Canadian trade region.
In 1887, a man by the name of Wilhelm Zippel took residence at the entrance of Zippel Bay which became a small fishing village by 1909. Half a century later in 1959, Zippel Bay became a State Park.
