Clarence Cannon National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to Clarence Cannon National Wildlife Refuge nestled in the Mississippi River floodplain near Annada, Missouri.
Refuge Wildlife: The wetlands, bottomland hardwood forests, and grasslands of Clarence Cannon National Wildlife Refuge help protect the home of numerous wild critters including ducks, geese, and bald eagles. Please treat their home with respect.
Refuge History: This land has long been well known for it's wildlife even before she was owned by Uncle Sam. In the early 20th century the Elsberry Drainage District built levees, ditches, and a pump house in the region in order to create the necessary conditions for rice farming. In 1931 the Great Depression put the farmers out of business. In 1964 the Federal Government purchased the land with funds from migratory waterfowl stamps in order to protect the habitat of migratory birds and other resident wildlife. The refuge was named for Congressman Clarence Cannon.
For the lover of the outdoors this refuge boasts a wildlife drive, fishing in Bryant's Creek, and so much more. Come on out and have a blast!
