Trail of Tears
Welcome to Trail of Tears State Park located near Jackson, Missouri. Here the visitor can explore one of the saddest chapters in United States History, the removal of Native Americans from the eastern United States and sending them westward to Oklahoma. There were 13 Cherokee Groups on the Trail of Tears and at this spot 9 of those groups crossed the Mississippi River in the harsh winter of 1838-1839. Aside from learning a little history people can also come out to explore over 14 miles of multipurpose trails, fish the Mississippi River as well as Lake Boutin, or have a nice picnic.
Camping: Trail of Tears State Park has two campgrounds, one located on the Mississippi River and one on Lake Boutin, making for a total of 54 campsites. The Lake Campground has basic campsites and the River Campground has more developed sites with electricity and water. Come out and stay a few nights.
Wildlife: Some of the wildlife one may find in this forested park include white-tailed deer, foxes, squirrels, wild turkeys, hawks, and occasional bald eagles just to name a few. Please treat their home with respect when visiting.
