Welcome to Taum Sauk Mountain State Park, home to both Missouri's highest Peak (1,772 feet ASL) and highest waterfall (132 foot drop. This beautiful park makes up a portion of the State of Missouri's largest natural area, the 7,028 acres St. Francois Mountains Natural Area, an oasis of bottomland forests, savannas, and upland forests.
Park History: The geological history of Taum Sauk Mountain State Park dates back over 1.5 billion years ago when volcanic activity spewed ash, dusts, and gases into the atmosphere and created a hard granite bedrock. Over time erosion helped to wash away this igneous granite bedrock and shallow seas left behind deposits of sandstone and dolomite. Today the visitor can get a glimpse of this volcanic history in the parks rocky openings called glades.
Flora and Fauna: Taum Sauk Mountain State Park helps protect the home of numerous plant and animal species. Some of the plants that grow inside the park boundaries include indigos, ashy sunflowers, and Indian grass. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include wild turkeys, Cooper's hawks, black bears, raccoons, white-tailed deer, gray squirrels, timber rattlesnakes, and snapping turtles. Please treat their home with respect.
