Dahomey National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to Dahomey National Wildlife Refuge located in northwest Mississippi near Boyle.
Refuge History: As far back as the mid-20th century the land that is now Dahomey National Wildlife Refuge was used for timber harvesting. The timber companies never did a complete clear cut and always allowed for the forest to grow back. In 1990, the Nature Conservancy purchased 9,269 acres and leased them to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service before selling them the acreage in 1993. Additional tracts helped to bring the refuge to it's present size of 9,691 acres and it now protects the largest remaining tract of bottomland hardwood-forested wetlands in northwest Mississippi.
Wildlife: The Dahomey National Wildlife Refuge helps protect the habitat of numerous wild critters including deer wild turkeys, great-horned owls, screech owls, barred owls, and many others. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this refuge boasts numerous walking trails and great bird-watching opportunities. Come on out and have a blast!
