Vicksburg National Military Park
Welcome to Vicksburg National Military Park, a place of Civil War history. It was here in 1863 where the Union forces fought the Confederate forces over control of the Mississippi River and won. Today one can learn more about the 47 day seige of Vicksburg by taking a tour of the park's virtual museum. The park's cemetery has over 17,000 graves and only about 5,000 of the soldiers in these graves have been identifield leaving rougly 12,000 unknown graves. This park is considered to be one of the world's most accurately marked military parks.
Flora and Fauna: Vicksburg National Military Park not only helps to preserve Civil War History but she also helps protect the home of numerous plants and animals. In fact, the geology of the region provided for very good soil which helped to provide the troops with valuable lumbere resources and made it easy for man-made caves to be dug. Some of the plants that grow inside the park boundaries include elms, oaks, walnuts, cedars, spider brake ferns, and many others. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include cardinals, woodpeckers, wild turkeys, copperheads, American alligators, alligator snapping turtles, white-tailed deer, chipmunks, bats, and raccoons.
