Kootenai National Forest
Welcome to the Kootenai National Forest, over two million acres sprawling across northern Montana near the Idaho state line and United States/Canada border.
Landscapes: At over 2.2 million acres in size, (nearly 3 times the size of Rhode Island), it comes as no surprise the the Kootenai National Forest covers a variety of landscapes. Some of these include mountain ranges such as the Whitefish range, Purcell range, Cabinet range, and Salish range. The forest also boasts two major rivers, the Kootenai River and the Clark Fork River. The Clark Fork river is dammed in two places, the Cabinet George reservoir and the Noxon reservoir. The Kootenai River is dammed up to create the Lake Koocanusa reservoir which spans 90 miles in length and stretches across the border into Canada. All three of these reservoirs help provide Montana's mountain towns with clean and cheap hydro-electric power. The lowest point in the forest is 1,862 feet ASL on the banks of the Kootenai River at the boundaries edge, and the highest point is Snowshoe Peak at 8,738 feet ASL.
For the lover of the outdoors Kootenai National Forests boasts hundreds of miles of multipurpose trails, rock climbing opportunities for people of all skill levels, and the Turner Mountain Ski Resort. Come on out and have a blast!
