Welcome to North Carolina's beautiful and historic Fort Macon State Park located in the Outer Banks region near Atlantic Beach.
Park History: Construction of Fort Macon began in 1826 and it was garrisoned in 1834 and named after North Carolina U.S. Senator Nathaniel Macon who fought aggressively for funding. In 1862 the Union Navy captured the fort and used it as a coaling station for their ships for the rest of the war. Fort Macon was a Federal Prison for the nine year priod from 1867 until 1876 when it was garrisoned once again for the Spanish American War. The fort was finally closed in 1903.
Wildlife: Aside from protecting a historic structure this park also protects a salt marsh ecosystem that is home to sea oats, crabs, blue herons, and many others. Please treat their home with respect when visiting.
DANGER! There are strong ocean currents in the area around Fort Macon Beach and visitors are encouraged to swim only in the lifeguarded areas. Surfing is not allowed at this beach.
