Welcome to the grand and beautiful Hanging Rock State Park located near Danbury, North Carolina. This park was first established in the 1930's with the help of the Civilian Conservation Corps. It is located in one of the most far east mountain ranges in North Carolina, the Sauratown Mountains which are not as high in elevation as the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west. The Sauratown Range was named for the Saura Native American tribe.
Trails: Hanging Rock State Park has over 20 miles of trails including the CCC Heritage Trail, which is barely more than 500 feet long and is considered an easy hike, the Cook's Wall Trail which is 2.2 miles and is considered to be moderately difficult, the Hanging Rock Trail which is 1.3 miles and moderately difficult, and the Indian Creek Trail which is nearly 4 miles long and is considered to be challenging.
Plants and animals: This park's ecology is very diverse with over 700 known species of mountain plants as well as many wild animals including bats, gray foxes, white-tailed deer, chrorus frogs, and screech owls. Please treat their home with respect when visiting.
Camping: Hanging Rock State Park has 73 campsites some of which are for trailers and others for tents. Bathhouses are located nearby. For those who would rather sleep indoors the park also has cabins. Come out and stay a few nights.
