Come out and explore!
Park History: Hammock's Beach State Park has a human history that dates back over 4,000 years when the first Native Americans came to this land to hunt it's game and fish it's waters. Legtend has it that in the 18th century Blackbeard used this island as a hideout from the law. In the 19th century Confederate Troops used this islands as safe points from Naval Attacks by the Union.
In the early 20th century the island was owned by a wealthy New York doctor named William Sharpe who used it as his own private hunting and fishing paradise. During World War II the U.S. Marines did some training on this island's beaches. It was finally in 1956 that this land became a North Carolina State Park and for the first few years it was open only to African Americans before it was desegregated in 1964.
