Elk Knob State Park
Welcome to one of North Carolina's newer State Parks, Elk Knob State Park. This land was purchased by the Nature Conservancy in 2003 and given to the State of North Carolina. Elk Knob itself, is one of the higher peaks in the region with a summit elevation of 5,520 feet. Despite the park's name, Elk have not been seen in North Carolina's wilderness since the late 18th century. Today this park provides habitat for other wild animals including white-tailed deer, black bears, bobcats, and wild turkeys. Some of the plants that live in this park include yellow buckeyes, American beeches, and sugar maples. One of the oldest known rivers in the world, the north fork of the New River, has it's headwaters inside the park. For the outdoorsman, this park boasts hiking trails, picnic tables, campsites, and more. Come out and explore.
