White Mountain National Forest
Welcome to New Hampshire's majestic White Mountain National Forest!
Forest History. In 1810 New Hampshire began to sell out many of it's public lands. In 1867, Governor Harriman sold the White Mountains region to numerous timber companies leading to the establishment of 832 sawmills by 1890. In the early 20th century the Weeks act brought much of this land back into the public domain and in 1914 the first parcels were purchased for just over $13 an acre (still doesn't beat the Alaskan purchase of 3 cents an acre). Over the years additional acquisitions helped bring the forest to her present day size of over 740,000 acres and is one of the most visited National Forests in the United States with over 7 million visitors per year.
Wildlife: White Mountain National Forest helps protect the home of numerous wild critters including deer, black bears, foxes, moose, raccoons, rabbits, squirrels, and bald eagles. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this forest boasts high mountains, waterfalls, miles of multipurpose trails, numerous ski resorts, and so much more. Come on out and have a blast!
