Welcome to Capulin Volcano National Monument located in northeastern New Mexico near Des Moines. This park is at an elevation of over 7,000 feet ASL which means a mild climate in the summertime.
Park History: This park is unique in that it offers the visitor a change to learn about more than 10 million years of geological history. Thousands of years ago creatures such as bison, bears, and mammoths witnessed the great eruptions of the Capulin Volcano. Around 60,000 years ago cooling rains helped to form the near perfectly-shaped cinder cone of Capulin Volcano. President Woodrow Wilson designated Capulin Volcano National Monument in 1916 in order to preserve "…a striking example of recent extinct volcanoes …" which "…is of great scientific and especially geologic interest…"
Flora and Fauna: Capulin Volcano National Monument helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the plants that grow inside the park boundaries include Indiangrass, Big Bluestem grass, and pinyon pines. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include deer, bears, and wild turkeys. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this park boasts trails down into the volcanic crater. No pets are allowed. Come on out and have an adventure.
