Elephant Butte Lake State Park
Welcome to Elephant Butte Lake State Park! This is home of the largest reservoir in the state of New Mexico. The lake was created in 1916 when a dam was constructed across the Rio Grande River. The area surrounding the lake has an ancient and unique geological history. It was once the seabed of a vast shallow ocean and then it was the hunting grounds for the Tyrannosaurus Rex. Many dinosaur fossils have been unearthed here. The park gets it's name from an island in the lake known as elephant butte, which is an ancient volcanic core shaped like an elephant. Today the park offers numerous recreational opportunities year-round including many aquatic activities such as fishing, boating, swimming, and water-skiing. There are also 15 miles of multipurpose trails. Come on out and have fun.
Camping: There are 173 campsites at Elephant Butte Lake State Park and 144 of them have electricity and water.
