Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to the Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge located at the meeting place of the southern great plains and Chihuahuan Desert not far from Roswell, New Mexico. This refuge, first established in 1937 in order to provide habitat for migratory birds, helps protect some of the rarest creatures in the State of New Mexico. Along the banks of the Pecos River, Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge Refuge consists of numerous water habitats in the middle of the dry Chihuahuan desert. Some of the wild critters who make their home around the Pecos River include the Pecos pupfish, Roswell spring snail, green throat darter, Noel's amphipod, and over 80 dragonfly species. The Refuge's sand dunes and grasslands, and plateaus help protect the home of Roadrunners, scaled quail, and horned lizards. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this refuge boasts over eight miles of trails and numerous wildlife viewing opportunities. Come on out and explore.
