Northern Tallgrass Prairie National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to Northern Tallgrass Prairie National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge was established in 1999 in order to help protect one of the last remaining stands of northern tallgrass prairie in the states of Iowa and Minnesota. It is estimated that there were once over 25 million acres of northern tallgrass prairie in Iowa and Minnesota but today that number is down to approximately 300,000. Presently the refuge is only 1,800 acres in size but expansion plans are in the books.
