Desert National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to the largest National Wildlife Refuge in the lower 48 states, Nevada's spectacular Desert National Wildlife Refuge, sprawling across the Mojave desert just north of Las Vegas. This magnificent gem was established May 20, 1936 in order to help with the recovery of bighorn sheep.
Flora and Fauna: At over 1.6 million acres in size and spanning across desert and six mountain ranges it comes as no surprise the the Desert National Wildlife Refuge helps protect the home of numerous plant and animal species. From the saltbrush plants of the lower valley elevations of 2,400 feet to the, blackbrush (4,200-6,000 feet ASL),Utah Juniper(6,000-7,500 feet ASL), single leaf pinyon(6,000-7,500 feet ASL), ponderosa pines (7,500-9,000 feet ASL), bristlecone pines, and white firs (7,500-9,000 feet ASL) of the high mountains, over 500 species of plants have been discovered in this refuge. There are also over 320 bird species, 53 mammal species, 35 reptile species and 4 amphibian species who make there home in this refuge. Please treat their home with respect.
