Finger Lakes National Forest
Welcome to the Finger Lakes National Forest, an oasis of ravines, pastures, and woodlands located in New York's Finger Lakes region.
Forest History: Before the arrival of European settlers the region that is now Finger Lake's National Forest was dominated by the Iroquois tribe. After the revolutionary war, European settlers moved into the region and set up farms. By the end of the 19th century, many of the soil's nutrients had been depleted and there was growing competition from farms in the midwest. During the Great Depression the U.S. Government purchased many of the former farm sites and put in the hands of the Soil Conservation Service as the "Hector Land Use Area," a program that sought to balance sustainable land use with the ecological health of the forest. In the late 1950's the U.S. Forest Service took over the "Hector Land Use Area" and in 1985 Finger Lakes National Forest was established.
For the lover of the outdoors the Finger Lakes National Forest boasts many miles of multipurpose trails. Come on out and explore.
