Welcome to Elmwood Park located in Syracuse, New York. Long before this land became a city park it once had an iron making furnace that helped build weapons to be used in the War of 1812. By the late 19th century the land was primarily used for agricultural purposes until a man named William Pardee built his "First Class Temperance Pleasure Resort" which boasted a merry-go round, shooting range, swan boat tours, a dance pavilion, a restaurant, and other attractions. Pardee's resort was described by one person as a "delightful spot, first rate, handsome, pretty, and safe, an ideal place for a day's outing."
In 1927 the City of Syracuse first purchased this beautiful piece of land in order to set what they called "a good example of the naturalistic park where beauty of the landscape is the predominating factor, a delightful unspoiled area of land surrounded by high class residential property." Today this park boasts a baseball field, walking trails, a picnic shelter, and a playground for the kids. Come on out and have fun!
