Welcome to Sand Run Metro Park located in Akron, Ohio.
Park History: The land that is now Sand Run Metro Park was once ruled by the Mingo Native American tribe. The present day Portage Path was once the western boundary of the United States and served as a Native American trail linking the Tuscarawas and Cuyahoga Rivers. During the War of 1812, General Elijah Wadsworth used the high ridge as a lookout point and made camp near what is now the Old Portage Area. In the 1930's the Civilian Conservation Corps helped to build many of the park's amenities.
Flora and Fauna: Sand Run Metro Park helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the plants that grow inside the park boundaries include foam flowers, bishop's caps, skunk cabbages, trilliums, and violets. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include squirrels, screech owls, barred owls, great horned owls, red-tailed hawks, green frogs, American toads, and salamanders.
