Optima National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to Optima National Wildlife Refuge, a bottomland forest oasis on the banks of Coldwater Creek on the Oklahoma Panhandle, a place referred to by many as "No man's land."
Refuge History: In 1978 the Optima Dam was constructed in order to provide refuge for migratory waterfowl. However the dam did not create the wetland habitat that the builders hoped for but the refuge still protects the habitat of numerous resident wildlife.
Flora and Fauna: Optima National Wildlife Refuge helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the plants that grow inside the refuge boundaries include indiangrass, cottonwoods, big bluestems, little bluestems, and yuccas. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include deer, coyotes, bobcats, beavers, skunks, badgers, and raccoons, red-tailed hawks, prairie falcons, bald eagles, golden eagles, and wild turkeys. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Optima National Wildlife Refuge boasts campgrounds, wildlife viewing opportunities, and so much more. Come on out and explore.
This was RecPlanet place of the day on October 1, 2017.
