Oyster Bay National Wildilfe Refuge
Welcome to Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge located on the north shore of Long Island not far from the bustling Big Apple.
Refuge History: One of the interesting fun facts about Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge is that it's located very close to the birthplace of the man who founded the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1968, the town of Oyster Bay and other local community members donated the land to the Fish and Wildlife Service under the Migratory Bird Conservation Act. Today, the only oyster farm operating in the State of New York still operates on this property proving 90% of the state's harvested oysters.
Wildlife: The wetlands of Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge help protect the habitat of numerous wild critters including seals and over 126 bird species such as seagulls, ospreys, ducks, and many others. Please treat their home with respect.
