Welcome to Pennsylvania's beautiful Tuscarora State Park.
Park History. Tuscarora State Park is rich in Native American History and some of the tribes who ruled this land included the Lenni Lenape, the Susquehannocks, the Iroquois, and finally the Tuscarora. The Tuscarora were originally native to the North Carolina region but after they lost the early 18th century Tuscarora War against early white settlers, they migrated northward accepting a welcoming invitation from the leaders of League of Five Nations. Upon their arrival, they became the sixth nation. Some of the region's first white settlers set up mines to harvest the region's coal and sawmills to harvest the forest products. The State of Pennsylvania purchased this land in the early 1960's and opened Tuscarora State Park in 1971.
Flora and Fauna: Much of the landscape that was heavily logged for so many years has been reforested with white pines, eastern hemlocks, red maples, white oaks, chestnut oaks, and others. This forested habitat is home to many wild animals including black bears, white-tailed deer, squirrels, and over 100 species of birds including ospreys, red tailed hawks, screech owls, and great horned owls. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Tuscarora State Park boasts a swimming beach on it's 96 acre lake, miles of hiking trails, 250 picnic tables, and much more. Come on out and have a blast! To contact the office please call 570-467-2404.
