Elk State Forest
Welcome to Elk State Forest located in central Pennsylvania.
Forest History: The name of this state forest derives from the large elk population that once thrived in the region. In the 19th century much of the virgin forest was harvested for it's timber. Many of the white pines that were harvested were made into ship masts. Soon many logging camps and saw mills began springing up in the region and many branches of Sinnemahoning Creek were used for the transportation of logs. In 1915 the logging era ended and wildfires took a devastating toll on the forest. In the early 20th century the State of Pennsylvania began purchasing the land that is now Elk State Forest. In the 1930's and 1940's the Civilian Conservation Corps helped to restore the forest to it's natural state and build it's amenities.
Flora and Fauna: Elk State Forest helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the plants that grow inside the forest boundaries include white pines, red pines, hemlocks, black cherries, beeches, and sugar maples. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include, raccoons, squirrels, foxes, white-tailed deer, and of course elk. Please treat their home with respect.
