Salt Springs State Park
Welcome to Pennsylvania's Salt Springs State Park.
Park History: When the first white settlers entered the regoin in the late 18th century the eastern hemlock forests in the region were untouched. However, like a lot of the other forests in Pennsylvania, they were harvested for their timber in the 19th century. The springs themselves were first discovered by Native Americans who tried very hard to keep the place secret from white settlers, but ultimately they failed.
For three quarters of a century years between 1795 and 1870 numerous attempts were made to commercialize the salt from these springs. However, efforts to make a profit off of the salt all ended in failure and the water was more sulphureous than salty. Oil exploration efforts in the region also ended in failure except for one minor exception, the North Penn Oil and Gas Company did manage to sell methane gas that they discovered leaking from one of their wells. The house that is located on the park grounds is what remains of an old dairy farm that was long operated by the Wheaton Family.
Flora and Fauna: The glacially formed landscapes of Salt Springs State Park help protect the home of numerous plant and animal species. Some of the plants that grow inside the park boundaries include wildflowers, ferns, and hemlock trees dated over 300 years old. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include skunks, beavers, black bears, bobcats, porcupines, coyotes, white-tailed deer, and over 150 bird species. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Salt Springs State Park boasts over 12 miles of hiking trails, a campground, and much more. Come on out and explore!
