Tioga State Forest
Welcome To Tioga State Forest located in northern Pennsylvania west of Scranton.
Forest History: Tioga was the name of a Seneca Native American tribe that once inhabited the region. The word translates to "the meeting of two rivers"." The State of Pennsylvania purchased the first 900 tract of Tioga State Forest in June of 1900 from a man named F.E. Watrous. Additional purchases were made through the remainder of the year 1900 and in 1955 the U.S. Department of Agriculture transferred 13,828 acres to the State of Pennsylvania. The industrial history of Tioga State Forest includes a lot of timber harvests and the production of birch oil.
