Welcome to Pennsylvania's Tobyhanna State Park located in northeastern Pennsylvania.
Park History: The land in and surrounding Tobyhanna State Park was the site of many ice industries in the earlier part of the 20th Century. During the winter the ice was carved out of the lake and stored in large buildings and then shipped to urban areas for use in early refrigerators. During the summertime, up to 150 boxcar loads were shipped out of the region daily. Some of the ice reached customers as far south as Florida.
Part of the land that is now Tobyhanna State Park was once a military reservation used for training for artillery and ambulance corps during World War I. After the war ended the ambulance corps training ended but the artillery training continued on until 1931. In the early and mid 1930's the reservation was used for housing of Civilian Conservatoin Corps workers and during World War II it was even used to house German P.O.W's. In 1949 the Federal Government transferred the land to the State of Pennsylvania and Tobyhanna State Park was established. The name Tobyhanna is a Native American word that translates to "a stream whose banks are fringed with alder."
Flora and Fauna: The bogs and evergreen forests of Tobyhanna State Park help protect the home of numerous plant and animal species. Some of the plants that grow inside the park boundaries include mountain laurels, american beeches, and red maples. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include black bears, white-tailed deer, raccoons, and squirrels. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Tobyhanna State Park boasts over 400 acres of fishing lakes, a swimming beach, 140 campsites, and much more. Come on out and have a blast!
