Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest
Welcome to Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, nestled in the Siskiyou and Cascade Mountain Ranges along the Pacific coast of southwest Oregon and northern California.
Forest History: The Rogue River and Siskiyou National Forests were not administered as one until 2004. The Rogue River National Forest was first established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908 as the Crater National Forest. In 1932 the name was changed to Rogue River National Forest in commemoration of the Takelma tribe who were called the "Rogues" by early French trappers in the region. In 1905 President Theodore Roosevelt established the Siskiyou Forest reserve which became the Siskiyou National Forest in 1907. The word Siskiyou is a Cree term that means "bob-tailed horse." The two distinct geological provinces that make up this forest are the Siskiyou Mountains and the Cascade Range. Volcanic snow-capped peaks including the 9,495 foot Mt. McLoughlin dominate the Cascade Range. The Siskiyou range is dominated by more complex soils and plant communities, world class wild rivers, and complex watersheds.
Flora and Fauna: This National Forest is the most floristically diverse National Forest in the United States making it a botanists dream. These include over 28 coniferous species and 400 sensitive species. Some of the wild animals in this forest include bears, mountain lions, deer, raccoons, squirrels, foxes, coyotes, and bald eagles. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this National Forest boasts hundreds of miles of multipurpose trails, over 200 miles of rivers, many mountains to climb, the Mt. Ashland Ski Resort, and so much more. Come on out and have a blast!
