Greenville South Carolina Parks
Welcome to Greenville, South Carolina's magnificent Reedy River Falls Park.
Park History: Long before the first European settlers set foot on the American continent the Native American tribe of the Cherokee. One of the first known European settlers in the region, a man named Richard Pearis, arrived in 1773 and purchased 10 square miles of land from three different Cherokee chiefs. Pearis set up a grist mill along the river which he operated for many years. Over three quarters of a century later in 1852, the Furman Institution, which would later become Furman University, bought the land and set up three textile mills and a cotton warehouse.
In 1967, the Carolina Foothills Garden Club purchased 26 acres of land from Furman University and worked with the City of Greenville and the University for the next 40 years making what is today's Reedy River Falls Park. Today the park boasts a restored historic cottage, a pedestrian bridge, and numerous pieces of public art. It is not too unusual for a man and a woman to come tie the knot in this beautiful place. Come out and explore!
