Welcome to Sand Hills State Forest, located between the Piedmont and Coastal Plain of South Carolina in Darlington and Chesterfield Counties.
Forest History: The sandy soils of Sand Hills State Forest were deposited by a prehistoric sea. In the 1930's, while the nation was struggling with the Great Depression, the U.S. Government purchased much of the land that is now Sand Hills State Forest under the Resettlement Administration. The people from whom the land was purchased were resettled to places with better soils. From 1939 until 1991 the land was managed as a State Forest in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Interior. In 1991 the State of South Carolina officially took ownership of the land and since that time many reforestation and habitat restoration efforts have been underway.
Wildlife: Sand Hills State Forest helps protect the home of many wild animals including deer, wild turkeys, mourning doves, woodpeckers, and tree frogs. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Sand Hills State Forest boasts miles of multipurpose trails, the Sugar Loaf Mountain Recreation Area, numerous picnic sites, and much more. Come on out and explore.
