Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park is one of Tennessee’s most important historical landmarks that played a pivotal role in American history. The formation of the Watauga Association in 1772 and the Transylvania purchase in 1775 mark just a few of the historical events that occurred here.

The park is an excellent way to get to know the area’s history with a well-informed visitor’s center that includes a museum, bookstore, and gift shop. The museum houses detailed artifacts with explanations and interactive displays that you can see before walking the grounds.

The reconstructed Fort Watauga is located behind the center, by the Watauga River. There’s also an amphitheater where annual shows are put on—if you go in July, you can see the drama reenactment, “Liberty: The Saga of Sycamore Shoals.”

Besides the Fort, you can also see the Tennessee Urban Forestry certified arboretum and North American Butterfly Association Monarch Waystation.
