Lake Isom National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to the oldest National Wildlife Refuge in the entire State of Tennessee, the beautiful Lake Isom National Wildlife Refuge. Lake Isom itself came to be due to geological events that occured in the early 19th century with a series of nearly 1,900 recorded tremors within the New Madrid Fault. This refuge was first established by presidential proclamation in 1938 and since that time has served as an important stopping point for migratory waterfowl. The mallard population in this refuge has been known to exceed 100,000 in the winter. Some of the other wild animals that inhabit this refuge include 52 species of mammals including foxes, white-tailed deer, and raccoons, and over 75 species of reptiles and amphibians. For the human visitor there are hiking trails, fishing opportunities, and more. Come out and explore!
