Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to Attwater Chicken Prairie National Wildlife Refuge located near Eagle Lake, Texas.
Refuge History: Over 100 years ago the Attwater prairie-chickens numbered over one million and had over six million acres of habitat across Louisiana and Texas. In the 19th and 20th centuries people began moving into it's habitat and building farms and cities. By 1919 there were no more chickens left in Louisiana and by 1937 there were only about 8,700 left in Texas. In 1967 it was listed as an endangered species and in 1973 the Endangered Species Act gave it immediate protection.
Flora and Fauna: Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the plants that grow inside the refuge boundaries include Indiangrass, bluestems, and switchgrass. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include bisons, armadillos, bobcats, coyotes, copperheads, alligators, and of course prairie chickens. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this refuge boasts the Pipit and Sycamore hiking trails, a 5 mile auto tour loop, and so much more. Come on out and have a blast!
