Park History: The land that is now Little Sahara Recreation Area is a reminder of ancient Lake Bonneville, an inland sea about the size of Lake Huron that once covered much of northern Utah. The desert's strong winds and plentiful sands helped to form the dunes of Little Sahara which is one of the state's largest dune fields. About 15,000 years ago the Sevier River flowed into Lake Bonneville and left many deposits of of sand. Once the lake receded the winds came and Sand Mountain deflected them upward causing them to drop their loads of sand. If you want peace and quiet you can visit the 9,000 acre Rockwell Outsanding Natural Area, vehicles are prohibted in this part of the park.
