Dixie National Forest
Welcome to the largest National Forest, in the State of Utah, the gorgeous Dixie National Forest which sprawls across the southern part of the state. The forest ranges in elevation from as low as 2,800 feet ASL near St. George to as high as 11,322 feet ASL on Boulder Mountain. The canyons carved out by the Colorado River and it's tributaries boast steep walls and rocks of numerous colors.
Forest History: Before the arrival of European settlers the land that is now Dixie National Forest was occupied by various Native American tribes for thousands of years including the Fremont, Anasazi, and Paiute tribes. Father Escalante from Spain was one of the first white men to explore the region while searching for the passage to California. In the mid-19th century many trappers, traders, and miners arrived in the region.
Flora and Fauna: Dixie National Forest helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the plants that grow inside the forest boundaries include aspens, pines, conifers and others. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include bears, deer, mountain lions, squirrels, coyotes, and many others. Please treat their home with respect.
