Camp Floyd State Park
Welcome to Camp Floyd State Park located near Fairfield, Utah.
Park History: President James Buchanan was under the impression that the Mormons were rebelling against the nation's laws and dispatched nearly a third of the U.S. Army, 3,500 soldiers, to suppressed the rumored rebellion in Utah. A rumor was all it was, to this day no war or rebellion has ever taken place in modern Utah history. Despite the fact that there was no rebellion taking place the Army stayed to help protect immigrants, explore the west, and keep an eye on the Mormons. Camp Floyd itself was built by the efforts of the Army and local citizens and helped boost the local economy. It was named for John Floyd, who was secretary of War at the time and was the largest military installation in the nation at it's peak. The population of Fairfield grew to 7,000 people making it the third largest city in the Utah territory at the time. When the Civil War began in 1861 many of the troops at Camp Floyd moved back east to fight and nearly all the Camp's structures were demolished. Only the remains of the Commissary building and cemetery remain today. Come on out and learn some history.
