Welcome to Snow Canyon State Park located near Ivins, Utah.
Park History: Do not let the name fool you, it's very rare to find snow in this desert park. The park is actually named for the early Utah leaders Erastus and Lorenzo Snow.
The park also boasts a geological landscape dating back over 180 million years at a time when much of Utah was covered by tiny grains of quartzite sand transported by the winds. These dunes were up to 2,500 feet thick and eventually turned into Navajo sandstone of orange and creamy white color. Over millions of years water carved through the sandstone to form the region's canyons. Starting about 2.5 million years ago and ending as recently as 20,000 years ago numerous volcanic eruptions occurred and filled the canyons with basalt, redirecting the rivers and forming new canyons.
The hunter-gatherer Anasazi tribe dominated this land for over a thousand years from around A.D. 250-A.D. 1250. From about A.D. 1200 until about the mid-19th century the Paiute tribe dominated this region. In the 1850's the first Mormon settlers arrived in the region while seeking their lost cattle.
Snow Canyon State Park was established in 1958 and has been the shooting location for many western films including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Jeremiah Johnson, and The Electric Horseman. The park was originally named Dixie State Park but was renamed to honor the Snow brothers.
