Welcome to Occoneechee State Park located on the shores of the beautiful John H. Kerr Reservoir.

Park History: This land was once occupied by the Occoneechee tribe, a group of Native Americans who played an important role in the fur trade. Their prominence ended in 1676, over 100 years before the founding of the United States, after a raid on the plantation of Nathaniel Bacon sparked an armed rebellion against the wishes of Virginia Governor Berkley. The tribe's people were defeated by Bacon's men and moved southward to North Carolina.

In 1839 a man by the name of William Townes built the 3,100 acre Occoneechee Plantation on this land. Townes eventually sold the plantation to a Dempsey Graves Crudup who lived on the land with his family until a fire burned down the house in 1898. In 1947 the US Army Corps of Engineers began to create the Kerr Reservoir and the state began to lease the land for recreational use in 1968.

Today the park boasts 48 campsites as well as over 15 miles of multipurpose trails. The equestrian campground is open from March 1-December 1 and has 11 sites with electricity that are 100 feet long and 24 feet wide. Campground B allows for a maximum trailer size of 35 feet and Camground C a maximum size of 30 feet. Come on out and explore!
