Welcome to the home of the second largest body of freshwater in the State of Virginia, Smith Mountain Lake State Park!

Park History: The Smith Mountain Lake was created in 1960 when the Appalachian Power Company began building a dam on the Roanoke River and the dam was completed in 1966. In 1967 the company donated a parcel of land to the State of Virginia for a State Park. Over the next 6 years the State purchased the rest of the land and opened it up as a State Park in 1983.

Today the park boasts numerous opportunities for water recreation as well as over 12 miles of hiking trails. Come on out and explore!

To contact the park office please call 540-297-6066. To reserve a campsite you can also call 800-933-PARK. This was RecPlanet place of the day on July 25, 2015.
