Prince William Forest Park
Welcome to Prince William Forest Park, a Washington DC area urban wilderness of piedmont forest.
Park History: Prince William Forest Park has a human history that dates back over 8,000 years when the Native Americans hunted and ruled the landscape. They left behind many artifacts including some of their hunting tools but Federal Law prohibits park visitors from collecting artifiacts inside any National Park.
In more recent history the Civilian Conservation Corps helped build the amenities in what was then known as the Chopawamsic Recreation Demonstration Area (Today's Prince William Forest Park). Before the land was made into a park it consisted of a pyrite mine as well as agricultural land. Some of the cabins that the CCC built were used by various organizations over the years including the YMCA, the Girl Scouts, and the Jewish Community Center.
Flora and Fauna: Prince William Forest Park helps protect the home onumerous plant and animal species in a region that has historically grown very rapidly. Some of the more than 700 plants that grow inside the park boundaries include American beeches, black walnuts, butternuts, hay scented ferns, and Christmas ferns. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include the eastern box turtle (which can live to be over a century in age), black bears, white tailed deer, beavers, snapping turtles, copperheads, ratsnakes, barred owls, woodpeckers, and red-tailed hawks. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Prince William Forest Park boasts nearly 40 miles of hiking trails, 4 campgrounds, bicyclng opportunities and much more. Come on out and explore.
