Fort Dummer State Park is located in the foothills of the Green Mountains near Brattleboro, Vermont. Fort Drummer was the name of the first white settlement in what is today's State of Vermont. It was first established in 1724 and was manned by a dozen Mohawk Native Americans and 43 English Soldiers. Eventually Fort Drummer protected what was then a Massachusetts Colony from attacks by the French and other Native American tribes. The Fort was made of strong pinewood and was thus well protected. Today most of Fort Drummer is now underwater due to a dam that was built on the Connecticut River in 1908.
The park helps protect a forest of beeches, oaks, birches, and chestnuts that give home to animals such as white-tailed deer, gray squirrels, raccoons, wild turkeys, foxes, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, and many others. For the human visitor there are over 50 developed campsites, hiking trails waiting to be explored, and much more. Come out and have fun! Fort Drummer State Park was RecPlanet Park of the day on May 7, 2014.
