Chequamegon National Forest
Welcome to the Chequamegon National Forest located in the north woods of Wisconsin.
Forest History: The northern Wisconsin landscape boasts one of the world's greatest conservation stories. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th century, many European immigrants settled in this region and much of the forest was harvested for it's timber in order to provide fuel, help build villages and the railroads, and so forth. By the early 20th century, most of the forest was gone, and many of the settlers established farms in the region. However, during the era of The Great Depression, many of the farmers could not afford to pay their taxes, and had to abandon their farms, leaving the land in the hands of the local counties. The local counties ended up selling these lands to the U.S. Forest Service and the hard working men and women of the Civilian Conservation Corps helped to replant trees and restore the forest.
Wildlife: The Chequamegon National Forest helps protect the home of numerous wild critters including badgers, foxes, deer, squirrels, beavers, and many others. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Chequamegon National Forest boasts hundreds of miles of trails, hundreds of miles miles of rivers, and so much more. Come on out and have a blast!
