Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge, an oasis of sand prairie, wetlands, and bottomland forest located within the Mississippi flyway on the banks of the Mississippi River in western Wisconsin.
Refuge History: Over 10,000 years ago much of the landscape in and around this refuge was carved out by glacial retreat at the end of the last ice age. Until the time that railroads, dams, and locks were built in the region, the lands inside the refuge were part of the Mississippi River that went through stages of droughts and floods. Today using modern technology refuge management can mimic this natural cycle by lowering water to expose the mudflats and allow plants to grow and helping migratory birds. This refuge was first established in 1936.
Wildlife: Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge helps protect the home of numerous wild critters including coyotes, muskrats, deer, squirrels, woodpeckers, wild turkeys, white pelicans, blue herons, and snapping turtles. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this refuge boasts over four miles of trails, great angling opportunities, and so much more. Come on out and have a blast!
