Choctaw National Wildlife Refuge

Activities:

Welcome to the Choctaw National Wildlife Refuge located on the banks of the Tombigbee River near the Alabama/Mississippi State Line in western Alabama.

Refuge History: In 1964, Choctaw National Wildlife Refuge was established on lands that were purchased by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the Coffeeville Dam Project. The main purpose of the refuge was to provide refuge for migratory waterfowl and wood ducks.

Refuge Wildlife: Today, the waterfowl population has exceeded 10,000 and a pair of bald eagles nests here in the wintertime. In the spring, flooding is not unusual throughout the refuge and many areas can only be accessed via watercraft. In the summer months storks have been sighted in the refuge. Some of the year round residents include beavers, alligators, deer, raccoons, wild turkeys, squirrels, and many others. Please treat their home with respect.

For the lover of the outdoors this is a popular anglers and hunters destination. Some of the fish to be caught include catfish, bream, bass, and white perch. Come on out and have a blast!
