Welcome to Sam McDonald Park located in Loma Mar, California.
Park History: This beautiful park was named for Sam McDonald, a man who descended from a family of slaves. McDonald was born in Louisiana in 1884 and moved around to several places before he finally settled in Mayfield, California and became a teamster for Stanford in 1903 where he would work in the athletic department for over a half century. McDonald began to purchase this land in 1917 and over the years he sponsored many children's charities on the land. Upon his death in 1957 the land as given to the University who then sold it to San Mateo County in 1958.
Plants and Animals: This park helps protect the home of numerous plant and animal species. Some of the plants that grow inside the park boundaries include big leaf maples, redwoods, douglas firs and numerous species of ferns. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include raccoons, bob-cats, deer, and woodpeckers.
For the lover of the outdoors this park boasts miles of multipurpose trails and beautiful scenery. Come on out and explore!
