Highmoor Nature Preserve

Highland Park Illinois Parks

Welcome to the Highmoor Nature Preserve, an oak savanna and wetland oasis located in Highland Park, Illinois.

Park History: This small nature preserve was at one time set to become a residential development but those plans were canceled when the Great Depression struck. The sidewalks were the only thing that the developers were able to build before they ran out of money and today those sidewalks help serve as firebreaks. In 2000, a local Eagle Scout named Devin Whithey helped to build the preserve's bridges and boardwalks. In 2002, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service gave some financial assistance in helping to restore habitat for the endangered Prairie White Fringed Orchid.

Wildlife: Highmore Nature Preserve, though small in size, is mostly untouched land that helps protect the home of numerous wild animals including white-tailed deer, coyotes, foxes, owls, and butterflies. Please treat their home with respect. Come on out and explore!
