Welcome to Vermont's Burton Island State Park located in Lake Champlain. This park is only accessible via watercraft. During the 18th and 19th centuries this island was actually used mainly for farming. The last person to own the land before the State of Vermont was C.C. Burton who had livestock such as sheep, pigs, cows, and chickens and crops such as peas and beans. This land first became a State Park in 1964 and initially there were plans to build a causeway but those plans were scrapped due to interest in keeping the island relatively isolated. If one does not have their own watercraft then the only way to get here is on the Island Runner Ferry which runs daily several times a day.
