Key Cave National Wildlife Refuge

Welcome to Key Cave National Wildlife Refuge located in northwest Alabama near Florence.
Refuge History: Key Cave National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1997 in order to protect the habitat of the endangered Alabama Cavefish and gray bat. Collier cave serves as important habitat for both species but Key Cave is only home to the cavefish. Before the U.S. Government purchased the lands, they were primarily used for agriculture or more specifically cotton plantations. Key Cemetery, located inside the refuge boundaries, may be the grave site of many slaves.
Wildlife: Aside from the gray bat and the Alabama cavefish, many other wild critters make Key Cave National Wildlife Refuge their home including deer, coyotes, squirrels, meadowlarks, eastern bluebirds, and many others. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this refuge boasts over 2.5 miles of multipurpose trails. Come on out and have a blast!
