Welcome to Black Diamond Minds Regional Preserve located in Antioch, California.

Park History: Long before the arrival of European settlers this park was home to various Native American tribes of the Bay Miwok Language including the Ompin, Chupcan, and Volvon tribes. Once Mexican and Spanish settlers arrived in the region in the late 18th century their way of life began to change. For many years ranching has been a major industry in this region. In the 1860's, Coal, or Black Diamonds as some call it, was discovered in the region and the mining towns of Somersville, West Hartley, Judsonville, Stewartville, and Nortonville were established. People from all corners of the world came to settle in thees towns and over the years four million tons of coal were removed.

In the early 20th century rising production costs and new energy sources put the region's coal mines out of business and California started becoming increasingly urban and industrial. However in the roaring 1920's miners returned to the region to mine the sands of the land. The sands that were mined helped in the glass-making of many companies including the Columbia Steel Works and the Hazel-Atlas Glass Company. In 1949, Belgian competitors and the shutting down of the local steel foundry helped push the sand mines out of business. In the early 1970's the East Bay Regional Park District began acquiring the lands of Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve.

Flora and Fauna: Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the plants that grow inside the park boundaries include black sages, Coulter pines, almonds, and pines. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include mountain lions, bobcats, foxes, deer, coyotes, and over 100 bird species. Please treat their home with respect.

For the lover of the outdoors this park boasts over 42 miles of trails, two camping areas, and so much more. It is also a great place for kite-flying. Come on out and explore.
