Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park

Sacramento, California

Welcome to Sutter's Fort State Historic Park in Midtown Sacramento, California. This fort was founded by a Swiss Immigrant named John Sutter and for a decade from 1839 until 1849 this fort was the central economic center of the first permanent European colonial settlement in California's Central Valley Region. Some of California's Nisenan Native American's, who had lived in the area far longer, helped to build this fort. The California Gold Rush, which started in 1848, really slowed down the fort's business.
